A kitsune is a legendary Japanese yōkai—a supernatural fox spirit with powerful abilities, including shapeshifting, illusion, and possession. Known for their intelligence and long lifespans, they are associated with the goddess Inari and can be benevolent (zenko) or mischievous (nogitsune). Kitsune are a prominent feature of Japanese folklore and culture, appearing in religious shrines, art, and even cuisine, with dishes like kitsune udon (udon with fried tofu) named in their honour.
Zenko (Good Fox): These are benevolent, spiritual beings and messengers of the goddess Inari, often depicted with a protective function at shrines and associated with fertility, prosperity, and good harvests.
Nogitsune (Wild Fox): These are mischievous or malicious fox spirits, often acting as tricksters.
